About This Course

Paediatric First Aid for Kent nurseries, schools & childminders

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) statutory framework requires that at least one person holding a current Paediatric First Aid certificate must be present at all times when children are on your premises or on outings. For Ofsted-registered childminders, nurseries, pre-schools, and other early years settings, this is a non-negotiable compliance requirement — not a recommendation.

Kent has over 1,500 registered early years settings — from childminders operating in Maidstone and Medway to large nursery chains in Canterbury and Dartford. Skills 42U delivers the full 2-day Paediatric First Aid course on-site at your setting, anywhere across the county. We bring infant and child manikins, AED trainers, and all practical equipment. Your team trains in the environment they work in, with all the flexibility that comes from not having to travel to an off-site venue.

Paediatric First Aid is a separate qualification from the standard workplace Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course. Most early years settings need both — PFA to meet the EYFS requirement, and EFAW or FAW to meet the HSE employer obligation for staff. We can advise on the most efficient training plan for your setting; call us on 07481 344486 for a free conversation.

FAQs

Questions about Paediatric First Aid in Kent

Yes. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) statutory framework requires that at least one person holding a current Paediatric First Aid certificate must be on the premises at all times when children are present, and must accompany children on outings. Ofsted inspectors verify PFA compliance during inspections. A setting operating without a current PFA-qualified person on-site is in breach of EYFS statutory requirements.
The 2-day course covers: infant and child CPR and AED use; choking in infants, children, and adults; anaphylaxis and EpiPen use; febrile seizures and epilepsy; unresponsive infant and child management; bleeding, wounds, and shock; burns and scalds; fractures and head injuries; meningitis awareness; and the role of the paediatric first aider. All topics are practised on infant and child manikins brought to your setting.
The Paediatric First Aid certificate is valid for 3 years from the date of issue. Ofsted requires the certificate to be current — an expired PFA certificate does not count as compliance. We issue Ofqual-regulated certificates on the day of training. Set a calendar reminder 6 months before expiry to arrange renewal in good time.

No. Paediatric First Aid and Emergency First Aid at Work are separate qualifications. PFA satisfies the EYFS requirement for working with children. EFAW satisfies the HSE employer obligation under the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 for staff as employees. Most Ofsted-registered settings need both. We can advise on the most efficient way to meet both requirements — call us on 07481 344486.
